Five tips to take better portraits instantly:
  1. Read your owners manual. Understanding your camera's controls will ensure that you are using the best settings for your shot.
  2. Turn off the flash. The most flattering light is natural light and the built-in flash on most cameras often 0ver lights your subject. If you are indoors, try placing your subject next to a large window to capture the light from the side.
  3. Zoom in to really capture your subject.
  4. Understand the rule of thirds. Imagine what you see in your viewfinder divided into three sections horizontally and vertically. Frame your subject where the lines meet.
  5. Take lots of shots. That's what the pros do. It may take 50 pictures to get just one that you love.
